European Payments Council

The European Payments Council (EPC) is the decision making and coordination body of the European banking industry in relation to payments. The EPC defines

  • common positions for core payment services within the European market place
  • provides strategic guidance for standardisation
  • formulates best practices and
  • supports and monitors implementation of decisions taken.

Its core remit is that of supporting and promoting the creation of a harmonised, open and interoperable European payments market through self-regulation.

EPC and SEPA

The EPC was established in June 2002 to support and promote the creation of a Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA).
